When you welcome or tolerate them as natural responses, negative feelings pass. That’s the good news.
The bad news? Positive feelings pass, too! And since positive emotions are “lighter” than negative, Dr. Barbara Fredrickson’s research has shown, so far, that a 3:1 ratio of positive emotions to negative emotions is helpful in maintaining an Upward Spiral.
Which is why you’ll want to be on the lookout for experiences that chip in to your Upward Spiral whenever you can. And that includes times when you’re feeling just fine. Because as a human, and as a writer, positive emotions help you flourish and thrive.
So “collect” them as much as possible…
The other morning I prepared to head out early to the gym and I noticed that it was beginning to be light enough to walk outside. The weather was warm-ish, and I made a choice. I’d get a better workout at the gym, but the spring air and sunrise would give me something else.
I headed outside and saw something like this:
It took my breath away. I recalled Byrd Baylor’s beautiful THE WAY TO START A DAY that we gave to our son many years ago, and read so many wonderful times.
I was glad I’d made the choice about the way to start my day. FYI, the gym results in feeling good, but (believe me) the visuals are not as great!
And I held on to the positive emotions a little longer by writing this post!
Do you have rituals, or photographs, or experiences that begin your day with heartfelt positive emotions?

Some days I start writing shortly after waking up. Other days are a little slower. It also depends on the season. Now that we are moving into the lighter time of year I’ll probably spend a few minutes outside before diving in.
Carol, I love how you’ve quantified the power of positive emotions. It is another reason to seek out those positive experiences and as you say, collect them. And it’s so true that the negative can stay with you longer the positive. Thank you!! And, that was a beautiful sunrise you witnessed!
Thanks, Paul. And honestly, I use the photos and background on your website to “collect” positive emotions, too! The views are so exquisite, and connect with my inner-wilderness-woman…I have to admit that my sunrise here was seen through some clutter of buildings and telephone poles – but it still did the trick!
